It’s hard to overcome that experience, but someday you’ll feel that life is wonderful. That’s life, isn’t it?
Shigeharu Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi)
Audition is a magnificent bastard of a movie, making us think it’s one of those romantic comedies predicated upon schemes of questionable ethics, then hinting at something darker, and then ZWAMMO!, stabbing us in the eyeball as if to say oh there’s something darker in here all right, then twisting the blade with excruciating deliberation, then yanking the rug out from under us, then yanking another rug out from under us, and just when we thought there were no more rugs, it yanks out the goddamn floor. If you get off on the kind of movies I just described, and you haven’t seen Audition yet, go do that now. This time, the sick, desperate laughter you hear will be your own.
